Sidewalks, Walkways and Slabs

Flatwork is any concrete that lies flat on the ground: sidewalks, walkways, long private drives, slabs for sheds and garages, and pads for equipment. It is the backbone of what we do, and it is where good base work and straight lines show the most.

We pour flatwork for homeowners and businesses around Lansing, from a short walk to the front door to hundreds of feet of sidewalk along a road.

  • Public sidewalks along streets, with curbs where needed
  • Walkways to front doors, back yards and ponds
  • Long private drives and paths
  • Shed, garage and equipment slabs
  • Trench drains and small commercial patches
  • Steps and landings

Doing Flatwork Right

01

Layout

We set string lines and grades so the finished concrete is straight, even and drains properly.

02

Base

A compacted gravel base keeps sidewalks from heaving and settling as the ground freezes and thaws.

03

Pour

Our crew places and finishes the concrete, keeping edges sharp and the surface consistent.

04

Joints and Finish

Control joints are spaced evenly and a broom finish gives safe footing year round.

Common Questions

Do you replace city sidewalks?

Yes. Many cities and townships require homeowners to keep the public walk in front of their property in repair. We build to the local spec and help with permits where they are required.

Why do sidewalks crack?

Concrete shrinks as it cures and the ground moves with frost. Good base, proper thickness and well-placed control joints make cracks happen at the joints instead of across the slab.

Can you match a new section to my old concrete?

We can match the finish and line up the joints. New concrete is lighter in color at first and evens out over time.

Areas We Serve

We also work throughout Lansing, Haslett, Williamston, Mason, Ingham, Livingston and Washtenaw counties.
